About the Metal Shop

A fabrication studio offering tools for welding, metal shaping, and jewelry making, open to students of all skill levels following safety orientation and equipment training. The shop is located on the Oakland campus, in Aron Art Center Building D, room 103.

Open hours

The Metal Shop opens in September, 2025

We host workshops and tutorials throughout the semester so you can come in and make things. All you need to do is attend an orientation and wear appropriate clothing (always close-toed shoes!). We are hiring shop assistants! September will be devoted to student worker training. Apply on Workday job requisition numbers: R135127 and R135128.

Orientations

Orientation days and times coming soon!

To work in the Metalshop, you must attend a Safety Orientation and Tool training. Orientation includes:  

  • Shop safety and PPE (personal protective equipment) 
  • How to reserve equipment or schedule appointments 
  • Community guidelines

Trainings

Trainings are required to use any powered equipment. Safety Orientation is your first step, followed by project-specific or tool-specific workshops. Check back in the fall for the full schedule.
