Drill Press

A drill press is used to drill holes into pieces of stock. A drill press is preferrable to a hand drill for pieces that need precision, as it is easier to cut 90 degree holes with a drill press than with a hand drill. You can use different sizes and types of drill bits to drill different sized holes at different depths into your stock. Many drill presses have variable speed, which is beneficial when cutting holes of differing diameters.

Safety Considerations

  • Make sure bits are installed straight and tightened properly before you start drilling: it’s easy to install bits crooked (which damages your project) or too loose (which can send a drill bit flying).
  • Keep stock secured on the table: unsecured stock can be dangerous and can fly off the table.
