Belt/Disc Sander

A belt/disc sander is used to roughly sand off edges of wood. This is great for fixing up curved edges that you may have cut off from the band saw. The belt portion of the sander features a rectangular belt that spins downward. The disc portion is a discs shaped sanding pad that rotates, allowing you to sand on the half that is spinning downwards. The disc offers more variation in sanding speed, and the belt provides a more constant sanding speed.

Safety Considerations

  • Always have large stock braced against the table: The belt and disc move very quickly, and not using the work table properly increases the chances that you will lose control of your project.
  • Watch your fingers: Sanders take away material very quickly, and having your fingers too close to the belt can scrape your fingertips easily.
