The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered whale species, and part of this issue is due to the commercial lobster fishing industry. They are getting entangled in the ropes of traps set to catch lobsters, leading to injury, drowning, or starvation.
As a part of their project for a mechanical engineering design class, Kate, Ben, and Dhriti are working to coming up with a solution to combat this issue and help the species. They have created a design for a lobster trap that is whale-safe! To do this, they have used the metal shop to cut their metal beams, the soldering station to connect parts together, and different power tools. They have also said that just the tables and space in general have been helpful in allowing them to meet together and build their project.
