Vortexer User Guide

What is a Vortexer?

A vortexer, also known as a laboratory mixer, is an instrument used to mix small volumes of liquids in containers such as test tubes, vials, or microplates. It operates on the principle of creating a vortex, which is a swirling motion of the liquid.

Safety Considerations

  • Only vortex closed, capped containers!
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow handling procedures for your materials.
  • Wear chemical splash goggles (not safety glasses) when working with corrosive acidic or basic buffers or other solutions.
  • Clean spills promptly and thoroughly to prevent contamination and maintain accuracy.
  • Ensure that the vortexer is placed on a stable and level surface to prevent tipping or accidental spills.
  • Do not overload the vortexer platform with containers or samples beyond its specified capacity.

Tips for Success

  • The Operating Instructions below are for Continuous Touch mode, in which the instrument will continue to operate until you release pressure on the platform. To operate in other modes, consult the user manual below or makerspace staff.
  • The Operating Instructions below show the instrument set up with the 3-inch platform, which is an all-purpose surface that can accommodate many types of vessels. To operate with the Pop-off Cup, tube holder, microplate holder, or other attachment, consult the user manual or makerspace staff.

Operating Instructions

Ensure that the vortexer is placed on a stable and level surface, and plugged in.

Press the Mode Button until SEC is illuminated on the Mode Display.

Press and hold the Time Down Button until the Time Display reads “0”.
